FAST AND EXCITING.
Wairarapa Snatch Victory from Wellington. Per Press Association. MASTERTON, July 18. In a fast and exciting game of fluctuating fortunes the Wairarapa Rugby representatives defeated Wellington today by 21 points to 16. Wellington were very much in the picture in the opening stages, hut Wairarapa, playing ; beautiful football, gradually assumed the upper hand and completely dominated play in the last twenty minutes. The Wellington backs were given a feast of the ball, Kilby, at the base of the scrum, giving a great display; but, generally speaking, their attack was lateral.;; When the Wairarapa backs did secure possession they invariably gained ground, and, though they lacked the polish of the.opposing chain, they were a sounder and much better balanced combination. The forwards were evenly matched, but Wairarapa lasted better and in the closing stages were all over the heavier Wellington pack. Stringfellow and Devine played brilliant games for Wairarapa, while Kilby and Ball were easily the best oT the Wellington backs. Wellington had the best of the opening exchanges, but play had been hr progress for twenty minutes before Puller opened Wellington’s account with a penalty. Ten minutes later Fitzgerald scored an unconverted try for Wairarapa. Just before the interval Dellabarea raced across for Fuller to convert, Wairarapa evening up soon after resumption when Seivers scored for Hemi to convert. Then Wellington put on 8 points in quick time, Dellabarca and Barry scoring tries, one of which was converted by Fuller. Wairarapa took command. Hemi landed a penalty and Stringfellow scored for Hemi to convert. Three minutes before time Stringfellow scored the winning try, which Hemi converted.
