STOCKING RIVERS.

Preparations for Collecting the Fry. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. The council of the North Canter, bury Acclimatisation Society met last evening, the president (Mr F. Steans) in the chair. On behalf of the Rivers Committee, Mr T. Bain submitted a recommendation to the Hatchery Committee that an endeavour be made, providing ample supplies were available, to carry out heavy stocking of the snow rivers with rainbow trout fry. The chairman said that the Hatchery Committee had already made preparations for collecting the fry. Mr K. Campion reported on behalf of the Hatchery Committee that advice had been received from the curator that a total of 2,880,000 brown trout ova had so far been collected. Orders had been received for 1,290,000 ova. The previous chairmen’s action in authorising the supply of 2000 brown trout fry to Dr R. D. Milligan for experimental purposes, and also six trout to be obtained from the traps for Professor Percival, was approved. The committee had approved of the supply of 5000 e3 r ed ova for liberation in the Chatham Islands. The report was adopted. Game Committee. Mr C. D. Wheeler, chairman of the Game Committee, reported that applications from the Marlborough and East Coast societies for the supply of sittings of chukor eggs were held over for further consideration. The committee recommended that the society communicate with the Auckland society and the Department of Internal Affairs in connection with an exchange of eighteen cock pheasants with a view of obtaining a change of blood. The chairman’s action in arranging to supply two hen pheasants and one cockbird to the Grey society was approved. The report was adopted. The report of the Rangers’ 'Committee was dealt with in committee and on resuming, the chairman reported that in connection with recent cases reported by a ranger at Lake Ellesmere, it had been decided that the council should pay half of the total costs, and that the ranger be advised that in *future he should not antagonise those persons he finds it necessary to apprehend. The question of installing an electric alarm system at the hatchery at Greenpark was referred to the purchase board with power to act. .
