WINTER EXHIBITION.
Unique Opening Ceremony at Auckland. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 18. i The Auckland Winter Exhibition was ’ opened in unique circumstances to- 1 night, Sir Samuel Hordern, President ( of the Roval Agricultural Society of c New South Wales, performing the cere- i rnany by radio telephone from a room < in the Sydney Post Office. Mr J. A. C. ' Allum, President of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association, presided. £ After addressing the gathering and e referring to the fact that the ceremonv ( was unusual in that it was to be per- i formed by someone not actually pre- i sent, Mr Allum called upon Sir Samuel < Hordern to speak. The power was switched on to the ] circuit at 7.45 and there was a delay 5 of about three minutes before Sir 1 Samuel’s voice came over the air. He < said that on behalf of his society he ex- < tended a very cordial greeting to the j people of New Zealand, and he wanted , to express his best wishes for a most 1 successful exhibition. The officers of his society wished to be associated in j the greeting and it gave them very great pleasure to extend the hand of « friendship. A considerable portion of Sir Samuel’s ] remarks were not audible to the gather- } ing, but he referred to the relations between Australia and New Zealand and the similarity of the problems of the two countries. The line was kept open to enable Mr Allum to reply. \
