ROAD DEVIATIONS.
Bad Bends Eliminated on Tai Tapu-Hals well Route.
Good progress is being made with several paving jobs on main highways in the Canterbury district at the present time.
The District Engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr F. Langbein, stated this morning that the contractors for the preparation and two-coat sealing of the road between Halswell and Tai Tapu, a length of about five miles and three-quarters, were getting on well with the work. There were two deviations on the rcute, and these would be open for traffic within a few days. The first eliminated a horseshoe bend just beyond Halswell, and the second a sharp bend on the Christchurch side of Tai Tapu. The foundations of the road had been completed for nearly thyee miles, and the wet weather experienced in recent months had proved suitable for preparing the surface for tar-sealing, obviating the need for artificial watering to produce consolidation. The preparations for the tar-sealing of the trolley-bus route, along Francis Street, Bassett Street and Travis Road, from Burwood to Racecourse Road, were also well advanced. By the time the warm weather arrived, the contractors, said Mr Langbein, should have all the preparation work completed and be ready to apply bituminous sealing coats to the surface. The preparation work for the sealing of the highway between Leithfield and the Waipara River, a distance of nine miles, was also being pushed ahead by the contractor.
