MR E. W. KANE DEAD.
Service on Parliamentary Staff. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 18. The death occurred to-day of Mr Edward Williaiu Kane. C.M.G., Clerk of Parliaments, after a brief, but serious, illness. The late Mr had been associated with the New Zealand Parliament for a greater period than any member of either House or any officer of the Parliamentary staff. T£ie late Sir Edwin Mitchelson, who oied last April, was the only survivor of either House from the time when Mr Kane joined the staff. The son of Mr Henry Russell Kane. Mr Kane was born in Wellington, where he received his education. He attended Roman Catholic schools, and later a commercial college. Mr Kane was articled to Mr Frafik M. Ollivier. barrister and solicitor, and passed the solicitor's general knowledge examination, but had to discontinue his studies on account of health. In 1886 he joined the Parliamentary staff as a committee clerk. He rose to the position of Clerk of the House of Representatives after filling all the subordinate offices. In 1930 he was appointed Clerk of Parliaments, and vacated his place in the House of Representatives to become Clerk of the Legislative Council. Shortly before his promotion he was honoured with the C.M.G. Mr Kane was a patron of cricket and football, and was a life member of the Wellington Racing Club. In 1921. Mr Kane married the widow of the late Mr F. E. B .ume, K.C.. Mrs Kane died only a few months ago.
