AUCKLAND’S MILK.
No Bacteriological Tests to Be Made. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 17. Information that the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council does not propose to undertake any expense in connection with the bacteriological examination of milk was received by the Auckland Hospital Board from Dr T. J. Hughes, Medical Officer of Health at Auckland. Dr Hughes added that he had been informed by the council that it did not intend to appoint any further staff, nor to pay for work carried out by the Health Department. “ I pointed out that if the council would assist the department by way of subsidy the work could be extended,” Dr Hughes wrote. “ However, no assistance is forthcoming. As the regulations stand, the department has no responsibility for undertaking bacteriological counts, yet I am anxious to undertake some such work if possible. The department cannot see its way clear to do so at the present fee of £2 2s a sample or £3 3s with a guinea pig test.” Members said that the letter disclosed a dangerous state of affairs, as I it was necessary that all precautions should be taken to ensure a safe and healthy milk supply. It was decided that the information contained in Dr Hughes’s letter should be referred to the Milk Council for comment. ,
