MATCH DRAWN.

County Out for 157 in Second Innings. BOWES'S FINE BOWLING. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received July 18, 10.40 am.) LONDON, July 17. The match between Yorkshire and Australia was drawn. The Australians secured a lead of eight on the first innings and dismissed the county in the second innings for 157. At stumps the Australians in their second innings had lost one for 28. The weather was fine, and the wicket was good. Australia just avoided being headed in the first innings. Grimmett, after square-cutting Smailes. was cleaned bowled by Bowes, who then shattered Walks wicket, and in his third over might have Fleet-wood-Smith caught in the slips. Ebeling drove Smailes and Bowes to the boundary. He should have been caught and bowled by Smailes at 11, but drove him twice powerfully through the covers to the boundary, passing Yorkshire’s total before being clean bowled by Bowes. The innings lasted 260 minutes. *

Despite a leg injury preventing him from bowling at top speed, Bowes put up an excellent performance and took three for 10 to-day.

Yorkshire re-opened at 12.15. Wall quickly dismissed Mitchell. One for one.

Barber in trying to glance Ebeling’s in-swinger was bowled. Two for seven. Only one had been added when the first ball in Wall’s next over, fizzing from the pitch, flattened Leyland’s off stump. A precarious but stubborn stand was made by Wood and Turner, who lasted until just before lunch, when Fleet-wood-Smith bowled Turner. Four for 44. Wood, who normally is number eight batsman, continued to surprise by the tenacity with which he defied the spin bowlers. He reached 50 in 115 minutes and a total of 102 was raised in 125 minutes. Wood was out in the next over and Sellers was bowled neck and crop. Six for 102. Good crisp batting bv Verity and Smailes restored Yorkshire’s fortunes. When Yorkshire were dismissed only 40 minutes remained, so, as it was impossible to win. Brown and M’Cabe contented themselves with steady practice against innocuous bowling. Scores:—

Will Be Fit for Fourth Test. (Received July 18. noon.) LONDON, July 17. Ponsford’s back is responding well to treatment and his fitness for the Test is assured. Messrs Hardstaff and Dolphin have been chosen as umpires for the fourth Test. “Sporting Life” says it* is confidently expected that Marylebone will shortly make a pronouncement on the question of the revision of the leg-before rule. It is highly probable that a ball pitched outside the off stump will become eligible for a legbefore decision.
