Did Not Sell Christchurch Committee “ A Pup.”
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 17. A Christchurch Press Association message yesterday stated that a member of the Christchurch Citizens Unem* ploymerit Committee said he felt that Mr Bromley, deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board, had “sold the committee a pup” in assuring them that some arrangement was to be made with hospital boards to assist B class workers.
“As far as I gathered when I left the Christchurch committee there were no misunderstandings.” said Air Bromley, in a statement to-day. . “I had pointed out that t;he board’s attitude was that it was unwise to fix the sustenance rate without work for cities at a higher figure than the present rate, because of its nearness to country wages, and I went on to suggest that if in the case of B2 men, who were border-line cases between hospital boards and the Unemployment Board, there were any men in special necessitous circumstances then it was a matter in which hospital boards might well consider rendering further assistance. “I also suggested that some conversations had alreadv taken place with the Minister of Health on these lines, but I made no promises !as to what action the hospital boards would take, as quite obviously I am not in a position to do so. As evidence of the nature of some of the border-line cases I need only mention that at least one of the workers so classed in Christchurch goes to his No. 5 Scheme work on crutches.”
