Mr J. D. Gobbe will leave by tomorrow morning’s express for Gore where he will judge at the Gore Poultry Club’s annual show.

Mr W. E. Leadley was a passenger for Wellington by the ferry steamer last evehing. He will attend the meeting of the National War Funds Council in Wellington to-day. Messrs C. W. Congratulations on being elected an honorary life member of the United Burgesses’ Association were extended to Mr J. Stewart at a meeting of the Richmond Burgesses’ Association last evening. Motions of sympathy with Mrs Stanley Wilkinson, in the death of her mother, and with Dr P. C. Fenwick and Mr J S. Kelly ir. their illnesses, were passed at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A. last evening Reference to the death of Mr H. G. Ell was made at last night's meeting of the Christchurch Beautifying Association by the chairman, Mr R. B. Owen. A motion cf sympathy with Mr Ell’s friends and relations was passed, members standing in silence. Mesrrs H. E. Stephens, chairman of the Fruit Export Control Board, and W.■ Benzies, secretary, who attended the conference of the Canterbury fruitgrowers yesterday, will leave for Blenheim to-day and will be in Nelson on F riday.

Mr D. E. Parton. chairman of the Christchurch executive of the New Zealand Legion, and Mr K. M. Gresson, a member of the executive, left last evening for Wellington to attend the annual conference of the legion, which will epen there to-day. Congratulations wefe extended to Mr O. Hattersley, an old boy, by the West Christchurch Old Boys’ Association last evening on his gaining representative honours for the first time in the Canterbury team which is to defend, the Ranfurly Shield against Hawke’s Bay on Saturday. Major P. H. Bell. D S 0., N.Z.S.C., Staff Officer in Charge No. I Regimental District, Auckland, has been appointed General Staff Officer, Southern Command, Christchurch, to replace Lieutenant-Colonel E. Puttick, D. 5.0., who has been appointed Quarter-master-General at General Headquarters. Major Bell will arrive in Christchurch on Friday. A deputation from the Cottage Homes Committee of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, consisting of the Rev F. T. Read and Messrs A. C. Bretherton and E. F. Wiilcox, left for Wellington last evening. The deputation will wait upon the National War Funds Council at its anmial meeting to support an application for a grant in aid of the Cottage Homes Settlement scheme. In accordance with a recommendation from the Library Committee of the Council of the University of Otago, at its monthly meeting, yesterday decided to recommend to the Carnegie Corporation that its library fellowship, offered to the university in 1931, should be granted to Mr William John Harris. Mr Harris, who is thirty years of age, is a son of the late Captain E. Harris, of Oamaru. He was educated at Christ’s College, and was for a short period a master at that school, whilst continuing his studies at Canterbury College. He later went to England and entered Oxford University, where he took the degree of B.A. with honours in modern history. On leaving Oxford he travelled widely in Northern Canada before returning to New Zealand and again taking up a mastership at Christ’s College. Towards the end of 1932 he embarked on an extensive tour of the South Sea Islands as one of the crew of the yacht Water Lily,
