Question of Meat Supplies for Unemployed. DEPUTATION SEEKS AID. The New Brighton Borough Council met in the Council Chambers last night. The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) presided. and there were also present— Councillors A. E. Lawry, W. E. Wilkins, J. K. Worm 11, W. L. A. Taylor, R. E. Holloway, W. Hulme, J. Orsborn and T. E. Thomson.

A deputation, consisting of Messrs Carson and H. Burnaiul, was received from the New Brighton Unemployed Association, seeking the council’s cooperation and assistance in connection with the welfare of the registered unemployed. Mr Carson explained that a scheme to purchase meat at the Addington sale and distribute it to the unemployed at cost price was under consideration. The deputation asked the council’s assistance in financing the scheme, and also for the use of the meat shop i n the council yard to cut up and distribute the meat. On the motion of Councillor Wilkins, it was decided that a sub-committee, consisting of the Mayor and the chairman of finance, confer with the men and report back to the council. It was decided that a party telephone be installed at the residences of the town clerk, borough inspector and overseer, and that a cash register be purchased. Councillor Worrall gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution. The sum of £3OO was involved, and with that sum much useful work could be done to the roads. Mr V. A. Pickles wrote applying for an extension of his agreement in respect of the Pleasant Point tea kiosk for a further term of two years from December next. The Mayor said that a previous applicant had been told that the council would not consider any applications until the present lease expired. On the motion of Councillor Taylor, it was decided that tenders be called for the kiosk at. the end of August, and that both applicants be notified of this decision. After discussion in committee. Councillor Thomson moved that the council strike a lighting rate of three-eighths of a penny in the pound. He said that the credit for this was due to the Improvements Committee in inviting Mr Hitchcock to attend a meeting of the committee. Councillor Worral I said that the offer of the M.E.D. was a very generous one The motion was carried. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Ainsworth, that acts of vandalism in the various reserves be reported to the police. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Orsborn. that the tender of Messrs C. M. Brown and Co. be accepted for tar-sealing part of Estuary Road, the amount to be used from the £250 set aside for first works to be undertaken by the council. British Pavements, Ltd., reported that a careful survey of the balloon loop, Bowhill Road, had been made. It was clear that the cause of the disturbed pavement was the action of the trolley bus, with its practically fixed set of four wheels, accentuated by the angle of its progress when- negotiating the loop. They felt that the action was so severe that the Tramway Board should accept responsibility of maintaining the loop or provide a bituminous concrete “ way ” round the loop for its own vehicles. On the motion of the Mayor, the letter was referred to the Bowhill Road Sub-Committee with power to act. Rawhiti Domain Board. At the conclusion of council business, the members met as the Rawhiti Domain Board. Mr E. A. M. Leaver being in the chair. Mr C. V. Lester attendcd on behalf of the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association. to inquire whether the board would be prepared to grant a site for a swimming bath and paddling pool in the Domain on the Esplanade front, between Rawhiti Avenue and Bowhill Road. Mr Worrall moved that the site outlined by Mr Lester be set aside for the construction of a swimming bath. The motion was carried.
