DUTY ON BEER.

Importer Makes Request for Reduction. (“Star” Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 17. A. request for the lowering of duties on imported beer to one shilling a gallon was made to Mr Coates to-day by Mr W. J. Plowden Wardlaw, representing Messrs J. and R. Tennent, brewers, of Glasgow. Mr Wardlaw produced the expenses the firm had to bear on its beer in comparison with the expenses of local beer, including in the charges on local beer the expenses of the increased cost of production in .New Zealand in comparison with that at Home. He asked to be allowed to import up to 5 per cent of the local production, which was the proposal he put before the Tariff Commission. If the duty were brought down to one shilling a gallon, he would double the present imports, and therefore no revenue would be lost. In reply, the Minister said he w’Ould consider the representations.
