NEED 109 TO WIN.

Australia Make 251 in First Innings.

SURREY 184 IN SECOND INNINGS

United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received July 3, 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 2.

Australia made 251 in their first innings against Surrey, who in their second innings were all out for IS4 at stumps. Australia require 109 to win.

Bright batting against good bowling was the principal feature of the morning’s play when the Australians continued their first innings. Grimmett fell a victim to the new ball. Eight for 226. Play was resumed in hot weather.

Ponsford cast off much of Saturday’s restraint, cutting and driving with his normal freedom. Barnett, timing a stroke badly, was caught in the slips. Four for 154. Fender was called on when M’Cabe arrived. The Australian was completely beaten, being clean bowled in his second over. Five for 157.

Fender puzzled Kippax for the remainder of the over.

Kippax, however, went on to play in better style and Surrey’s score was passed without further loss. Ponsford was easily caught in the slips, off the shoulder of his bat. He batted for 100 minutes, being mostly dull and unduly cautious. He hit nine fours.

Allom got Bromley in the next over. He was brilliantly caught in the slips. Seven for 189.

Kippax and Grimmett batted brightly, the former repeatedly punishing Fender and hitting him to the boundary. Two hundred came up in 225 minutes.

In Gover’s first over after lunch Kippax lifted his bat, expecting the ball to go harmlessly past, but it swung in and removed his off stump, astounding Kippax, whose most impressive innings of the tour came to an inglorious end. He had batted ninety minutes and played a chanceless innings, which included six fours.

Allom bowled Ebeling and ended the innings after 255 minutes. Surrey’s Collapse.

Surrey made another disastrous start. Sandham was out first ball in Ebeling’s second over when M’Cabe took a good catch at first slip. One for 0. Thereafter Gregory and Squires shaped comfortably for an hour, the latter scoring freely from FleetwoodSmith until he deflected one into the wicket. Two for 49.

Off the last ball in the same over Barling gave Fleetwood-Smith an eas3 r catch. Three for 49.

Fleetwood-Smith seemingly struck a deadly patch, clean-bowling Holes in the next over. Four for 53.

Surrey drew level with Australia without further loss.

Brown punished the bowlers, but Gregory was repeatedly beaten. Brown was out'in trying a big hit. He batted for fifty-five minutes and gave a dashing display, which included eight fours. Gregory’s lucky innings of two and a half hours ended when Barnett took a smart catch at the wicket. Six for 131. Fender was brilliantly caught at forward square leg off a hard pull. Seven for 152. Grimmett soon afterwards dismissed Gover, Brooks and Allom. The innings lasted 195 minutes. Scores:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings. ENGLAND’S STRONG SIDE. (Received July 3, 1 p.m.) LONDON, July 2. The critics agree that England’s third Test team will be stronger than the first or second Test sides if the fitness of Allen and Clark is assured. The fielding promises to be stronger. RUMOURS ABOUT NOTTS. LONDON, July 2. The “Daily Mail’’ says: “Several reports have reached us that the Australians’ match against Nottinghamshire on August 11 will not be played. Notts officials and the Australians are silent, beyond expressing surprise at the mere suggestion of cancellation.”
