Mountain Heights.
Dear Sir.—ln last Saturday’s “ Star ’’ I noticed a query as to the heights o{ several small peaks, ineluding Mount Isobel, in the Hanmer vicinity. I was very interested in Mr Pascoe’s information on this subject, but it is evident it was not made clear to him that the Mount Isobel of which your correspondent wrote is situated in the Hanmer district. It would seem that the Mount Isobel mentioned by Mr Pascoe may be classed as a peak, but the same cannot be said of the other Mount Isobel. It is shown on N.Z. four mile sheet No. 23, and is one of a ridge of hills which lie between the Clarence and the Hanmer Plain. I do not remember the actual height, but it would not be above 5000 ft. In summer its ascent consists in little more than a hike, and can be done in a few hours by the most inexperienced.—l am, etc* C.F.H. The height of the Mount Isobel between the Clarence River and the Hanmer Plain is 4239 feet. —Ed. “ Star.”
