NO SETTLEMENT.
Dispute Between Stewards and Shipping Owners.
RESTORATION OF CUTS SOUGHT. There is no settlement as yet in the dispute between the ships’ stewards and the shipping owners. The men held two further meetings at Wellington yesterday, when the matter was discussed. At the morning meeting a resolution was passed asking the owners to meet the men early in July to discuss the restoration of the 10 per cent cut. It was stated that if this were agreed to the men were prepared to carry on in normal fashion in the meantime. The owners' reply was received at the second meeting, but no information could be obtained this morning as to its terms. It was stated, however, that it was not considered satisfactory. A further meeting will be held on Saturday. The men deny that there is any strike, and state that if the Maori and the Makura are held up it is not their fault. They say that the ships could be recommissioned immediately if the owners desired it.
The men at present working are under a six months’ contract and will work out their time. It is when the question of their re-engagement is considered that the major problem will
