Mutton Values Slightly Easier. LIGHTER ENTRY OF BEEF. There was a decided weakness about the sale of mutton at the metropolitan stock market at Addington yesterday. Ewes showed an average drop of 6d to Is a head, with the lighter sorts cheaper than that. Light wethers were also easier, though the heavier ones exceeded last week’s rates in many cases. The beef entry was not nearly so heavy as had been the case in the previous six or seven weeks, and constituted only a slight over-supply. Values, however, were down by 10s a head for the medium and low-condi-tioned stuff. Good beef sold fairly firml}'. I*at Cattle. The entry yesterday was smaller than last week’s, comprising 410 head, compared with 505. There was less outstanding beef forward than at the preceding sale, but, on the other hand, there was not such a heavy proportion of aged cow beef. Some lines of big plain station steers were included, and on the whole the quality was below normal. The market all round was weaker, although the better class cattle sold freely. For all the medium and low-conditioned cattle, values were down by 10s a head. There were some passings, including a fair quality North Canterbury station line. Top price of the sale was £ll 2s 6(1 I for a steer sold by Sharp Bros. (Halswell), eighteen comprising the line, and ranging from £8 2s 6d to £ll 2s 6d. It was a very prime selection. A purebred Friesian heifer from F. Crump (Springston) made the good price of £9 12s 6d. Best beef made to 22s 6d per 1001 b, prime, from 19s to 21s, heavy 16s to 18s, secondary 13s to 14s 6d, and rough down to 11s. Values were:— Extra prime heavy steers to £ll 2s 6d. Prime heavy steers, £7 to £8 15s. Medium-weight prime steers,. £6 bo £7 Ordinary quality steers, £4 to £5 ss. Bight steers to £3 15s. Extra prime heifers to £9 12s 6d. Prime heifers, £4 10s to £7. Medium heifers, £2 10s to £4. Bight heifers to £2 ss. Extra prime cows to £7 17s 6d. Prime cows, £3 10s to £5. Medium cows, £2 5s to £3 ss. Aged and inferior cows to £2 2s 6d. Tat Sheep. There was an entry of 4400 head of fat sheep, compared with 4500 last week. The quality was fair, though the yarding included some very light stuff. The market opened slightly weaker than at the preceding sale, but hardened somewhat. Bidding was erratic, with a steady inquiry for good half-bred ewes suitable for the butchery trade. Ewes were down by from 6d to Is, the lighter sorts showing a greater drop. Bight wethers were cheaper, but many of the heavier ones were tinner than last week. Top price for wethers was 31s 7d, obtained for eleven of nineteen sold on behalf of a client. Ewes went to 23s 4d, which price was obtained for the tops of a line of fifty-seven forwarded by J. and P. Clinton (Darfield). Values were:— Extra prime heavy wethers, to 31s 7d. heavy wethers. 25s 6d to 27s medium weight wethers. 22s 6d Ordinary quality wethers, 18s to 225. Bight wethers, 15s to 17s 6d. Extra prime heavy ewes, to 23s lOd. Prime heavy ewes, 22s to 235. medium weight ewes, 19s to 21s Ordinary quality ewes, 16s to 18s 6d. Bight ewes, 12s to 15s 6d. Vealers. „™« ro was a small entry of mixed quality. All good vealers sold at last week’s rates, the top price being £5 3s bo. iso small vealers were yarded. Dairy Cattle. There was an entry of 72 head in this section, the majority of the*m being in backward condition. Good sorts were eagerly sought, and brought satisfactory prices. Values were:— £ Good second and third calvers, £7 to Medium second and third calvers. £5 10s to £6 10s. Backward second and third calvers, 30s to £2 10s. Extra good heifers, £7 to £9. Good heifers, £5 to £6 10s. Others, £3 to £4 10s. Store Cattle. They were no adult steers in the penning, which comprised for the most part old cows in low condition. A good pen of yearling Shorthorn steers sold at £2 2s, young cows made from 35s to 40s and old cows 15s to 20s. Tat Figs. There was a moderate entry of baconers and a good one of pork. There was a good demand with prices a little firmer. One hundred and three head were bought for export. Values were:— Choppers, £2 to £4 11s. Baconers, 45s 6d to 52s 6d. Heavy baconers, 45s 6d to 52s 6d. Extra heavy, to £3 12s 6d. Average price per lb, 4|d to sd. Porkers. 22s to 28s 6d. Heavy porkers, 30s to 37s 6d. Average price per lb, 4ld to 54d. Store Pigs. There was a medium entry of store pigs, which included a big proportion of rough sorts. The few good pigs penned were in keen demand. No large stores were offered. There was a good attendance of buyers. Values were:— Weaners. 8s 6d to 10s 6d. Barge weaners, to 12s 6d. Slips, 13s to 15s. Rough small stores, 10s to 12s. Good small stores, 13s to 15s. Medium stores, 16s to 18s. Sow in pig, £4 2s 6d.
