“PLEASE YOURSELF, SIR.”
Governor-General Angry With Mayor. TORONTO, June 8. Arriving to give official blessing to the Toronto Centenary celebrations, the Governor-General (the Earl of Bessborough) was kept waiting by the Mayor (Cr Stewart), who was conferring the freedom of the city upon Mary Pickford, the motion picture star. Mary is revisiting relatives in Toronto, her birthplace. For- ten minutes the Earl and the Countess stood before a huge out-of-doors audience, awaiting the official reception. Everybody was tfiost embarrassed. When the Mayor bustled on to the platform Lord Bessborough hardly acknowledged him. You had better go on with your Mary Pickford show,” he said savagely. The Mayor’s reply was inaudible, but apparently it made the Governor-Gen-eral angrier still. He threatened that he would report the matter to the King. “ Just please yourself, sir,” replied the Mayor, and led the way to the Fort Museum, where Lord Bessborough refused to sign the visitors’ book. Lord BessLorough returned to Ottawa and is now in bed with influenza.
