VITAL QUESTIONS.

Business for City Council Meeting.

Several questions of far-reaching importance will be dealt with at the monthly meeting of the City Council on Monday night, and it is expected that the proceedings will be protracted. The most vital question affecting the ratepayers of the city will be the proposals of the Finance Committee for the conversion of loans and the consolidation of the special rates. A full statement on the proposals will be made by the chairman of the committee, the Rev J. K. Archer, and it is considered probable that a divergence of opinion will be revealed during the discussion.

Another question that is of considerable importance to the citizens is the proposal of the Milk Producers’ Association to introduce legislation for the control of the milk supply in the metropolitan area, including the fixing of minimum retail prices. A Bill has been prepared, and a deputation will wait on the council for the purpose of explaining its contents and enlisting support for it when it is introduced in Parliament. Voting System. In accordance with the decision of the Labour Party Conference to jettison the plank providing for the proportional representation system of election, Councillor G. T. Thurston, m accordance with notice given at the last meeting of the council, will move that the resolution adopting proportional representation as the system of election for the council be rescinded. There are two other notices of motion to be dealt with, one by Councillor H. T. J. Thacker providing for the parking of motor-cars on one side of the street only in the business area, and one by Councillor A. E. Armstrong providing for a shorter working week
