News in Brief

Six a Penny. At an auction in Auckland a lot of 700 shares in a gold-sluicing concern was offered by way of a diversion from the more material blocks of land The shares were forfeited ones, and there was no reserve on them. The auctioneer warned prospective buyers that there might be calls to pay in the future,* if they became possessed of the shares. « Nobody seemed very keen to take the risk, and the auctioneer had to suggest that someone should name a price. A man who probably had no intention of buying the shares when he entered the auction room offered 10s, and was no doubt very surprised to find that they were knocked down to him The price of ihe shares worked out at about six a penny, so if any gold at all is found they should at least pay for themselves. New Waikato Bridge. * Tenders for a new traffic bridge across the Waikato River at Fairfield, near the northern boundary of the Hamilton Borough, have been called by the Waikato County Council. The bridge, which is estimated to cost about £25.000, will be of reinforced concrete and is expected to take about eighteen months to build. An attractive design has been selected. The structure, including approaches, will be 4Goft long and will relieve congestion of traffic at the existing bridge, which is situated some distance upstream from the site of the proposed bridge. Designed by Jones and Adams, civil engineers, of Auckland, it will provide a crossing over the river comprising three main spans of the bowstring type, each 130 ft long, flanked at each end by 35ft span approaches. The minimum width of roadway between kerbs will be 20ft, while on each side, cantilevered from the bowstring girders, will be footways varving in width from oft to Bft. The span at the western, or Hamilton, end linking the bridge with the Great South Road will be splayed to afford a 90ft radius of curvature at the junction of the road and bridge.
