Mrs Benn, Auckland, is visiting her daughter, Mrs Norman Tingey, St Andrew’s Square. Mrs F. Smith and Miss Marcia Smith, Kaikoura, are the guests of Mrs A. Smith, Prebbleton. Mrs G. H. Ilolford, Knowles Street, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs R. M. M’Knight, Palmerston North, has returned home. Major and Mrs R. S. Hunter-Blair.

“ Elmwood,” Heaton Street, returned to Christchurch this morning from a holiday spent in Rotorua. Mr and Mrs F. M. Warren, “ WaiI puna,” Clyde Road, who have been paying a short visit to "Wellington, returned to Christchurch this morning. Rear-Admiral Colin Alfred Molyneux Sarel, 0.8. E., R.N. (retired), accompanied by his wife and two daughters, has arrived in Auckland by the Aorangi on a visit to New Zealand, Lovers of the theatre will be interested to hear of the recently-announced engagement of Miss Victoria Hopper and Mr Basil Dean. Miss Hopper played Tessa in the film, “ The Constant Nymph,” which Basil Dean directed and produced. She is at present playing the lead in the Drury Lane show, “ Three Sisters.” Miss Hopper is 25 years old, and Basil Dean 45. The marriage will take place this month. Mr Dean’s former marriage with Lady Mercy Creville, aunt of the present Earl of Warwick, w r as dissolved last year.

Dame Sybil Thorndike has been playing the part of the Queen in the ” Old Vic ” production of “ Hamlet,” in which the New Zealand actress, Marie Ney, is taking the part of Ophelia. Miss Ney is at present appearing in “ Touch Wood,” a new’ play by C. L. Anthony, the author of

“ Autumn Crocus,” which had a successful season here a few years ago, w’ith Theo Shall in the leading role. “ Autumn Crocus,” by the way, has just been made into a talking film, with Fay Compton duplicating her London success as the heroine, and with Ivor Novello as the innkeeper.
