Cistus of Rock Rose.
A Garden Corner:
TN THE CISTUS or rock rose we A have a family notorious for the prodigality of its flowering. The flowers are out only for a day or two, but are so amazingly pro. lific as to constitute one of the best of dwarf shrub families. By some botanical authorities the Cistus is being grouped with the Helianthemums —a race of rock plants very popular with hillside gardeners, and making a brilliant show on trailing evergreen plants. The best of the Cistus varieties grow from 2ft to sft high. C. Ladaniferus is one of the bestknown. Large single white flowers with a chocolate blotch at the base of each petal, make it a very handsome border shrub. It produces gum laudanum and is a native of Spain. C. Formosum is a j/ood thing in yellow and the Spanish variety, C. Lusitanicus. a dwarf with white flowers spotted rose, makes a fine bush for the rockery. There is also a purple form, but the three first-named are most popular. T. D. LENNIE.
