STRENGTHENING LINES.
Work by Post and Telegraph Department.
Good progress is being made by the Post and Telegraph Department with various reconstruction and strengthening works it has in hand. It is expected that the reconstruction of subscribers’ lines at Cheviot will be completed this week. Workmen there will then proceed to Rakaia to carry out similar work. A gang of men on Banks Peninsula has completed the line to Port Levy, and has finished half the reconstruction work between Port Levy and Pigeon Bay. It is possible that the West Coast gangs will complete the strengthening of the South Westland line to Waiho this week, and they will then proceed further south to Weheka.
At Ashburton the old switchboards in the telephone exchange are being replaced with a branch multiple system similar to that which operated in the Christchurch exchange prior to the cut over to the automatic exchange. Under the new system, operators will be able to answer any call from one position. At present they have to relay some calls through a second operator.
