Half Sustenance Pay Given Single Men.
Men from the Jollie’s Pass, Hamper, camp for single unemployed who coul 1 not be placed in positions when they reported at the Labour Bureau yesterday, have been placed on half sustenance of 7s 6d a week, according to a statement made by their leader this morning. The men claim that this is not sufficient, and with the object of having their sustenance grant increased a representative waited on Mr P. R. Climie. a member of the Unemployment Board. In reply to an inquiry. Mr Climie said that where work could not be found for the men sustenance would be paid them according to the Unemployment Board's scale. Owing to dissatisfaction the men from the Jollie's Pass camp came to Christchurch in a body on Friday, and interviewed the Officer in Charge of the Labour Department (Mr R T Bailev), and the Conservator of State Forests (Mr W. G. Morrison) The men were given to understand that thev would not be penalised in the ordinary way and stood down for a fortnight, as Mr Morrison pointed out that the camp would have been closed in any case in the near future. The men were accordingly instructed to report at the Labour Bureau } esterday.
