The soft state of the grass track at Ashburton on Saturday settled any chance Probationer had of winning the Ashburton County Handicap, for which she was elected sixth favourite. She was sixth when a furlong had been covered, but she was unable to hold her position, and she dropped back, and was the last to finish. TQMKTXSOX IMPROVING.

After being under observation for several davs, W. J. Tomkinson was operated on at St George’s Hospital on Bunday. A report received this morning stated, that he was making satisfactory progress. It will be remembered that Tomkinson met with an accident while loading sulkies on a horse float, and received injuries to his •stomach. MAKES COME-BACK, Mataunga went a splendid race for J. J. Kennerley in the Longbeach Handicap at Ashburton, on Saturday. Mataunga was on 72yds behind in a 3min 45sec class, and he began so fast that he was in eighth place in a field of nineteen when a furlong had been covered. He trotted into fourth place at the end of five furlongs, and was handy to the leaders at the top of the straight. The effort he made in the earlv stages caused him to. lack stamina at the finish. He has built up a good deal in condition. and now bears a bright and healthy appearance. Mataunga has only to race up to his early form to reward his owner for his numerous disappointments. RADIANT GOLD.

The performance of the two-vear-old filly Radiant Gold in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes augurs well for a prosperous future. A month before the race she struck one of her knees very badly and had to be eased in her work. She was going remarkablv well at the time, so good, in fact that her owner fancied her for the big event on Saturday in which she finished fifth. She was second out of the barrier, and she followed the leader until the straight was reached, where she began to tire, but she hung on to finish within four lengths of the winner. She is a very smart filly by Rey de Oro, from- the very speedy mare, Sashwood, who won races under the tutelage of J. Henderson at Oamaru. Radiant Gold is owned by Mr J. R. M’Cully, and is trained at Kurow by the veteran, S. Hawthorne. MOANA TAMA’S BREEDING, Moana Tama, the winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, was got by Nelson Derby from Thelma Wrack, by Wrack from Joy Bells, by Cathedral Chimes—Marie Llovd, by Petereta— Marie Corelli, by Wildwood—Thelma, by Kentucky—Pride of Lincoln, by Touchstone—Sally. Thelma has been a great taproot. She produced Willowwood, Wildwood Junior, Marie Corelli, Authoress (dam of Author Dillon), Adonis, Lady Sybil, Cameos (dam of Onyx), and Waverley, amongst her foals. Moana Tama comes from a mare inbred to Peter the Great through Wrack and Petereta, states “ Sentinel ” in the “ Otago Daily Times.” Touchstone was a bay horse got in England by Touchstone from Quebec, by Gladiator. The great sire Musket is a descendant of Touchstone, whose line has bred on to the present day through Carbine and Spearmint. Touchstone sired three Derby winners in Cotherstone, Orlando and Surplice, and after about a century his line is still successful through Musket and Hampton. Through Peter the Great and Petereta the Sapling Stakes winner traces back to thoroughbreds in the shape of Denmark, Margrave, Bellfounder and Petereta, in referring to him in comment concerning the strains, it is said,

“ and the very best thoroughbred strains, so that Petereta’s house does not rest on a foundation of sand.” Subsidy, who acted as runner-up in the Sapling Stakes, was got by Rey de Oro from Lady Brent, by Brent Locanda—Lady John, by Advance, a son of Prince Imperial and Rose, whose granddam was got by the thoroughbred horse Quicksilver. Prince Imperial was got by Hambletonian Bell Boy from Princess, a granddaughter of Traducer in tail male from a mare by the thorr oughbred Prickwillow. Ironside, who filled third, place, was got by Wrack from Gatwick, by Logan Pointer from Precision, by St Swithin from the thoroughbred mare Kildasa, a daughter of Idas, who won the Great Northern Poal Stakes and Auckland Welcome Stakes, so that he traces back to a source of early speed.
