Many Big Productions for Early Release. English film producing companies now command an abundance of capital, according to Mr Barrie Y. Marschel, general manager of British Dominions Films (N.Z.), Ltd., who arrived in Christchurch this morning to make arrangements for the re-opening of the Civic Theatre as a talking picture house on Monday with “ Bitter Sweet,” Noel Coward’s famous operetta, which delighted London for two and a half 3*ears. “ This capital,” said Mr Marschel, “ enables them to make costly pictures and to keep their best artists in England. So far as Australia and New Zealand are concerned, British Dominions Films, Ltd., has •been in the forefront of the battle for British pictures from the outset ” Mr Marschel said that the attractions Civic Theatre patrons would see after ” Bitter Sweet,” in the order named, were:—(l) ’General John Regan,” a witty Irish comedy, filmed from George A. Birmingham’s book, with Henry Edwards ("The Flag Lieutenant’) and Chrissie White, supported by the famous Abbey Players; (2) Twickenham s great film, " The Wandering Jew, starring Conrad Veidt, from E. Temple Thurston’s play and Eugene bucs immorta l book; (3) The Windsorbteriing production. "Going Gay,” with the celebrated London comedians, Naunton Wayne and Arthur Risco, and Magda Schneider; (4) British Lion’s “This is the Life ” (Gordon Marker and Bin me Hale); (») "Strike It Rich” "% e rmfhle-? ee , a l ml , ina Malo) ; (6) _ Trouble a truly big comedy with the natural farceur Sydney Howard- (7) “ For Love of You,” the second of Windsor-Sterling’s operatic comedies, starring the new “find,” Franko For(another Jan Kiepura), with Naun, ton Wayne and Arthur Risco. plus the beoutiful background of Venice at T/"l V .r / i tirne = J “The House of To-f n «r» ( f\ nne <: V ey and John Garrick); 9 1 ,1 the Air ’ (the first of its kind, in which a galaxy of famous broadcaststars appear) ; (10) "It’s a Cop” (Sydney Howard); (11) “Up to the Neck, with Ralph Lynn and his monwle*,n something different—a Wild Vest comedy; (12) “I Lived With You” a sophisticated comedy in which Ivor Novello has registered a huge success(l3) “The Man Who Changed His Name (Henry Edwards). Other special attractions for future release were:—“That’s a Good Girl” (Jack Buchanans biggest and best), “Sorrell and Son” (H. B. Warner), "The Queen’s Affair” (Anna Neagle ’ and Fernand Graavey), "Bella Donna” (Sir Cedric Hard wi eke, Conrad Veidt and Mary Kills), Nell Gwynne ” (Anna Neagle with Sir Cedric Hardwicke as Charles TJ.), "The Bohemian Girl” (Anna N'eagle and Fernand Graavey) " The Lily of Kiliarney ” (Balfe’s popular opera) and many other outstanding subjects in course of production.
