HOUSE RANSACKED.

Quantity of Jewellery Stolen. LEADLIGHT WINDOW SMASHED. Thieves entered the home of Mr R. A. Malcolm, 25, Bishop Street, last night, and stole a quantity of jewellery, valued at about £lO. F,ntry was effected through a window leading into the drawing-room during the temporary absence of the owner. Mr Malcolm was away from seven o’clock until nearly midnight, and during that time the house was ransacked and the jewellery removed. Entry was made through a leadlight window. The glass was smashed and the window opened. The thieves then pulled out all the drawers, evidently looking for gold, jewellery and money. A miniature cup on the sideboard was taken. It was a miniature of a cup won by a team from St Albans School, which Mr Malcolm trained for life saving. One of the parents had made the cup out of brass, a'nd had had Mr Malcolm’s name engraved on it. This had been sitting on the sideboard, with a golf ball in it. The golf ball had no value except that it was one that Mr Malcolm had been playing with when he holed in one. Evidently the thieves had thought the cup was of gold. Air Malcolm had recently taken delivery of a dozen bottles of wine, and eight bottles, together with half a bottle of whisky, had disappeared. A thing that annoyed Mr Malcolm was that damage had been done to a bag he used for carrying his bowls. The bag was a large leather one and had rather a tricky catch. This had been in a cupboard, with four bowls in it. Evidently the burglars thought they had made a find, for they tried to open the bag. They could not open the catch, and cut the leather round the catch. Air Malcolm sai,i that the bag was ruined. A neighbour states that she saw a man loitering in front of Mr Malcolm’s house at 9.45 p.m. She had not attached any particular importance to the fact at the time.
