« Recalls in To-day’s Classes. The Competitions were continued today, when preliminz y classes were judged in the Civic Theatre and Caledonian Hall. The first section of the Alice Gunner Memorial Prize was heard in the morning. This class is open to women residing in Canterbury, and carries with it a gold medal. This morning’s section was the test solos for soprano, mezzo and contralto voices, aiK recalls will be announced later when the own selection items have been sung. Faith Johnstone (Linwood). Masters Graham Hampton (Rlccarton) and Thomas Butler (Tlmaru). RECITATION. Girls, twelve and under fourteen. "The Little Greenstone Tiki ” (Gloria Rawlinson). Nineteen entries. Recalls: Misses Dorothy Shah (Sydenham) and Joan Wasley (Greymouth). Third prize: Miss Ethel Thomas (Dunedin). Very highly commended: Misses Beryl Baggs (Christchurch) and Alwys Watson (Richmond). To-night’s Events. To-night, at the Civic Theatre, the programme will include ballroom dancing on the stage, three couples competing in slow foxtrot, quickstep and waltz. This is one of the new features, and is arousing a good deal of interest. Two choirs will compete for the Be---r Challenge Shield, first section. Recalls for to-night include piano solo (eigne and under ten), boys’ test recitation, soprano solo, operatic dance (under t*n years), girls’ recitation (fourteen and under sixteen), baritone solo (open), girls’ recitation. ’The Absent-minded Man.” A hallet, first section in the duet in character, and the second section of the. one-act play make up the latter part of the evening’s contests.
