Superintendent D. G. Cummings returned from the north this morning. Messrs J. Sutherland Ross and A. L. Moore, and Dr E. Irwin arrived by the Wahine from the north this morning. Messrs E. Miller (Melbourne), F. Browne (Auckland). S. Manoy (Wellington) and A. J. Turnbull (Hokitika) are at the New City Hotel. A gazette notice announces the appointment of the Hon D. Buddo, Messrs Sidney A. Orchard and Richard B. Owen as members of the Christchurch Domains Board. Mr V. W. Kinley, advertising manager in Australia for the National Cash Register Company’ of Australasia, Ltd., arrived in Christchurch yesterday’ and is staying at Sumner. Mr John Corbett, formerly of the staff of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, left by the. ferry’ steamer last night to join the Opotiki branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency. At the thirty-second annual meeting of the Scottish Society of New Zealand, Incorporated, held in the society's rooms last night. Mr G. M. Telfer was unanimously’ re-elected chief of the society. , The council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, at its meeting last evening, decided to send a letter to Mr George Harper, congratulating him on the attainment of his ninety-first birthday. Mr Ralph Munn, director of the Carnegie Library at Pittsburg. United States, who is making a survey of New Zealand’s library’ systems, arrived in Christchurch last evening and is staying at the United Service Hotel with Mr John Barr, chief librarian of the Auckland Public Library, who is accompanying him on his tour. They’ will leave to-morrow for Dunedin. Sir Hubert Wilkins, the famous explorer, who has concluded his lecture tour of the Dominion, passed through Christchurch last evening on his way from Dunedin to Auckland, from where he will sail by the Monterev for the United States. After a visit to England Sir Hubert will return to New Zealand in time to leave Dunedin on September 1 with Mr Lincoln Ellsworth’s second expedition to the South Polar regions.
