SONG OF THE SHIRT.

Women’s Auxiliary Visit Factory.

At the invitation of the directors of the Lichfield shirt factory, the secretary of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Miss F. L. Cooper) took a party of members of the executive of the auxiliary to visit it. The "Song of the Shirt," with which many of the older generation are familiar, now has a different refrain, and the visitors saw many things which !nt< rested and astonished them. Tiie party, under the guidance of the warehouse manager (Mr J. F. Sendall). were shown every process of the manufacture of shirts of all varieties, pyjamas drab andP gay, collars of all descriptions, and were particularly interested in the wonderful machines which can do two or three processes at once, in the cutting-out department, and in the wonderful machines, which surely deserve to be called the “ bachelor’s best friend. ’’ which sew on buttons and make buttonholes in the twinkling of an eye. Other interesting appliances were the steam iron for pressing and fhe shrinking room. It could readily he realised that if New Zealanders supported their own factories the unemployment problem would not take long to solve, as this factory alone employs from 100 to 150 making shirts, collars andP pyjamas. Another noticeable feature was the bright, well ventilated workroom, with patent ventilators to remove any fluff or dust. At the conclusion of the visit Miss Cooper, on behalf of the visitors, expressed thanks to the directors for permitting the visit, which was so interesting and instructive, and to Mr Sendall and the forewomen for personally conducting the party and explaining the various processes.
