RELIEF OF DISTRESS.
No Penalty on Allocations, Says Mr Jessep. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 18. An unqualified denial was given to-day by Mr J. S. Jessep, deputychairman of the Unemployment Board, to a telegraphed statement from Ashburton that the board penalised the allocations of centres which made efforts to raise funds locally to assist unemploved. A reporter was shown the official notes of the proceedings at a meeting last month between a delegation from the Municipal Conference and the Government. The notes record that a denial was given at that time by the deputy-chairman of the board who was present. In reiterating the denial, Mr Jessep pointed out that the Mayor of Ashburton was present at the meeting referred to. Mr Jessep said he hoped, in fairness to the unemployed, that other municipalities would note the unfounded nature of the Ashburton statement and not on account of that statement, abandon any measures during the coming winter for the relief of distress.
