TWO EMBARGOES.

Australian and New Zealand Trade. POTATOES AND FRUIT. Negotiation? to terminate the embargo placed on New Zealand potatoes by Australia and also to end the ban against Australian citrus fruits in New Zealand will be reopened shortly, according to a statement made by the Prime Minister (Mr Forbes) last night before his return to Wellington. Mr F'orbes's attention was drawn to a recent cable from Sydney in which the Minister of Commerce (Mr F. IT. Stewart) was reported as having expressed the hope that before many weeks had passed the New Zealand Government would lift the embargo on Australian citrus fruits. Mr Forbes indicated that the Government of New Zealand fully appreciated the benefit of an exchange of trade between New Zealand and Australia and was willing to lift the embargo on Australian fruit, but at the same time claimed that Australia should play its part by lifting the embargo on New Zealand potatoes. Mr Forbes said that the great difficulty in these negotiations was that New Zealand had to deal with the Federal and State Parliaments of Australia. There was no agreement between the State and Federal Parliaments on the question of embargoes.
