Further Tributes to Work of Mr Beanland. Further tributes to the services to the city rendered by Mr J. W. Beanland were paid at a gathering at Ba!lantyne’s Tearooms yesterday of Citizen Association members of the Christchurch City Council. The occasion for the gathering was the approaching departures of Mr and .Mrs Beanland on holidays overseas. Mrs Beanland will stay in Melbourne and Mr Beanland will tour Great i Britain and Europe.

Mr E. H. Andrews presided and there were also present besides the guests who were being wished bon voyage and a safe return to Christchurch, Mr W. Hayward, Mr and Mrs T. Andrews, Mr and Mrs T. Milliken, Mrs E. H. Andrews, Mr M. E. Lyons and Miss E. Chamberlain Mr Andrews said that the Citizens' Association members on the council felt they could not let the opportunity go without expressing their best wishes to Mr and Mrs Beanland for a happy trip abroad. Messrs Milliken, Hayward, T. Andrews and Lyons added their felicitations. Mr Beanland briefly returned thanks tor the expressions of goodwill and the function provided on behalf of Mrs Beanland and himself.

They all knew the difficult position which arose three years ago over the policy question as to whether or not one of the Citizens’ Association members should take the chairmanship of the committee. He felt, however, that whatever party had the majority on the council, every councillor had his duty to do. Though there was feeling at the time over the matter, everyone had come to realise that the right thing was done, as, after all. they were appointed to the councnl net to represent parties, but the citizens who sent them there. As soon as they had got over the little bit of party feeling three years ago, the council as a whole had worked well together. In going away it was pleasing to know that one had the

respect and confidence of hi* fellow councillors. The function concluded with cheers for Mr and Mr* Beanland.
