OVERNIGHT ITEMS.

The householders who attended the annual meeting in the Cashmere School last evening were in favour of annual meetings of householders and elections of school committees after they had discussed the circular presented by the Canterbury School Committees’ Association asking for an opinion on the life of school committees. »■* *•# Consequent upon the wet summer, there was a decrease in the quantity of water pumped at the city waterworks during the past year, as compared with the previous j r ear. Until December there was a large increase in the demand for water, but after that month there was a decrease in garden watering. Owing largely to the building subsidy, there was a considerable increase in the number of water connections. The present total is 22,760, approximately 45 per cent of which are metered. The sum of £30,176 was authorised by the council for expenditure on this department in the past financial year, and the amount actually expended was £26,590, leaving a balance in credit of £3566. The executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce has set up a “Trade with the East” sub-committee to secure all information possible with regard to the possibilities of New Zealand trading with Eastern countries. The sub-committee has power to add to its numbers from outside the executive if necessary in order that all available resources may be utilised. Chambers of Commerce in China are being communicated with on the subject. According to advice just received by the acting Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department. Mr .T. Robertson, little hope is entertained by the Australian postal authorities of the present weekly air mail services from England to Singapore being extended to Australia much before the end cl the current year. New Zealand is vitally interested in this extension for the Government has agreed to subsidise the completed service to the extent of £SOOO. Three-fifths of this sum will be paid to the British Government and two-fifths to the Australian Government. j.j The first meeting for the year of the New Brighton W.E.A. was held in the schoolroom last night. There was a large attendance. Mr S.* Scholfield, in introducing the lecturer, said that there was now a Carnegie grant of £l5O to form a library. The first course would be on “Social Psychology.” The lecturer for the evening was Mr A. L. R. Noonan. Miss Crawford was elected secretary and Mr W. Wilkerson was elected delegate to the District Council.
