City Lighting.

Dear Sir, —I was amazed to learn that the Electricity Committee of the Christchurch City Council had not so much as taken the trouble to secure a report on the results of the recent demonstration of new types of street lighting given on Papanui Road. I heartily endorse your comment on the position, for the undoubted success of the demonstration at least warranted the expenditure of a few pounds on a report setting out w-hat our electricity experts thought of the new methods of illumination. Travelling along Papanui Road when the demonstration was in progress one could not but be impressed with the display and the inadequacy of the present street lighting system. Not only does the new system make the use of the highways safe for vehicular traffic, but it makes it safe also for pedestrians as the light is so projected that it penetrates into the darkest corners and lights up the full width of the street. If the city were flooded with lamps of the new type there would be less crime of the lurking type, and we would not have periodic outbreaks of bagsnatching.—l am, etc., PROGRESS.
