The spectacle of a real baseball game being played was witnessed by a number of Lyttelton residents yesterday morning, when two teams from the Japanese steamer Reiyo Maru, which is at present in Lyttelton, played a match at Officers’ Point. The men wore the proper American baseball garb of peaked caps, white duck suits and stockings. They . seemed to be very adept at the game and extraordinarily keen. In the afternoon the Japanese watched a game of Soccer being played. The railway excursion train from 1 imam w r as over an hour late in reaching Christchurch last evening. The train was scheduled to reach Christchurch at 8.25 p.m. and did not put in an appearance till 9.35 p.m. There were two hold-ups which accounted for the delay. Time xvas lost through a defective carriage having to be put off at Hinds, and the changing of the crossing-place with a down train from Rakaia at Dromore further complicated matters. At Rakaia a man is on duty, but there is no one stationed at , Dromore, and this accounted for the j long delay.
