Presentation of Croquet Prizes. (Special to the “ Star.*') ASHBURTON, April 15. There was a large attendance at the Ashburton Croquet Club’s lawns on Saturday on the occasion of the closing of the season. The president, Mrs J. Lane, presented the prizes won during the year. Several competitions were held, the results being as follows: Angles (Mrs Lane’s prize), Mrs W. H. Amos; senior break (Mrs E. Ruddock’s prize), J. Thompson: junior break (Mrs C. J. M’Eachen’s prize), Mrs W. J. Moore; golf croquet (Mrs D. Ileenan’s prize), Mrs F. Buxton. A presentation was made to Mr H. P. Clayton (curator of the Domain) for his attention to the lawns during the year. Rugby Football. Several Rugby football clubs opened their season on Saturday. A senior team of the Old Boys’ Club journeyed to Christchurch and played a match with Old Collegians. The Rakaia Club’s senior team also visited the city and contested a game with Merivale. High School and Rakaia third grade teams played a match at Ashburton, Rakaia winning by 12 points to 6. For the winners J. Doig, K. Dunlea and W. Behrnes each scored a try, and E. Evison kicked a penalty goal. K. Moore scored two tries for High School. Mr R. 11. Biggar was the referee. Basket-ball Club Reformed. The St Andrew’s Basket-ball Club which has recently been reformed, opened its season on Satxirday afternoon when there tvas a good attendance of members and friends. The Rev R. 3. Watson (chairman) declared the season open. Mr R. J. Thompson (president of the Ashburton Basket-ball Association), Misses C. Miller (coach) and D. Craighead (club captain) also spoke. Two friendly games were played.
