The autumn meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club will go down as one of the most memorable of the numerous successful functions held under the jurisdiction of the Ashburton Club. For many years, the club has been recognised as one of the livewire organisations in the trotting world; keen to do something new, and play its part in furthering the interof the sport. Since its inception, it has introduced several innovations, and in every instance it has achieved outstanding success. In addition to instituting the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and the New Zealand Champion Stakes, the club has arranged a series of handicap contests that provide horses of all classes with opportunities of racing over a distance that is not available to many of them on any other course. The results have been excellent contests and spirited finishes in record times. The meeting on Saturday was a big success, and the reception accorded Walla Walla when he paraded for the Durbar Handicap was evidence of the public’s appreciation of a good horse. The meeting was excellently conducted, and the attendance was the largest that has patronised the course for many ears. The track was in good order. The win and place system of betting was used. During the day, the sum of £16,072 was invested on the totalisators as compared with £12,699 10s for the corresponding meeting last year. WORTHY QUEEN ILL, Worthy Queen was elected favourite on the win machine for the Stewards’ Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. She raced very badly, and on returning to scale she was found to be indisposed. An examination disclosed bladder trouble. EDWARDS FINED. After winning the Autumn Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday with War Buoy, M. B. Edwards was called before the stewards and fined £lO for careless driving. ASHBURTON MISHAPS, There were two mishaps at Ashburton on Saturday, but neither was attended with serious results. Nearing the home bend in the Autumn Handicap Winning Wave lost hi.s driver, E. C. M’Dermott, and in the Farewell Handicap, G. M. Mouritz, driver of Wild Guy, was tipped out at the halfmile post. DRIVER’S LEG BROKEN. There was a serious accident in the Turua Bracelet Handicap at Thames on Saturday. Lady Amanda fell and her driver, R. A. M’Millan, of Auckland, broke his left leg above the ankle. Student Prince Also came down, and his driver, M’Garry, was severely bruised. * * * * F. J. Smith added four more wins to his driving record at Thames on Saturday. POPULAR HAROLD LOGAN. On a fast track at Thames on Saturday, Harold Logan, driven by F. J. Smith, and paced by the galloper Con F'uoco, ridden by J. Winder, went an exhibition mile and a quarter following the Cup, the first mile being covered in 2min 15sec and the whole distance taking 2min 44 2-ssec. Harold Logan received an ovation. FAVOURITE BROKE. Young Frank was travelling well in third place when he struck trouble and made a break as he was going into the back straight in the Farewell Ilandi cap at Ashburton on Saturday. That settled his chance. * s? Ht * Girvan was very sore when he returned to the birdcake after winning the Farewell Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. . SHOCKED TITS BACKERS. Peter Locanda shocked his many followers when he broke badly in the first furlong of the Farewell Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. HAS COURAGE, War Buoy proved that he is a game three-vear-old when he won the Autumn Handicap at Ashburton after a duel with Morello over the last furlong. FAVOURITE UNLUCKY. Greenmantle would have won the Rakaia Handicap at Ashburton had he not made a break, and lost several lengths at the start. lie was in front a furlong from home, but Sylvia Sidney beat,him at the finish. EASY FOR IMPROMPTU. Impromptu won the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton very easily. He began smartly, and took charge at the end of four furlongs. From there on he never looked like getting beaten, winning with a good deal in hand by two lengths. Impromptu has freshened up appreciably with the good spell he had during the early part oi the season, and he promises to train on to add to his already lengthy list of successes. REALLY GOOD EFFORT. Ayrmont Chimes paced a splendid race to beat all but Impromptu in the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton, anl he should not be long in securing a stake. NO CHANCE.
