“JACK’S THE BOY.”

Jack Hulbert Comedy at the Civic. “ Jack's the Boy,” one of the most ■ brilliant musical comedies ever produced, began a return season at the Civic Theatre to-day. Only on rare occasions does the picturegoing public ask for return seasons, but in the last few months the management of the Civic has received innumerable requests for no fewer than three attractions. The first of these, “Rookery Nook,” was recently screened and gained the distinction of breaking the theatre’s opening day record and, judging by the enquiries already received the second request, "Jack’s the Boy.” looks like being even more successful. Never has such spontaneous laughter been heard as that which greeted this delightful production when it was last screened. in Christchurch, and patrons who witnessed the attraction will agree that it rightly earned the long-run record it has established in Australia (running twenty-five weeks in one theatre). Jack Hulbert is cast

as a rather useless young man who is the despair of his father, an official of the Police Department. Stung by his father’s taunt that he would never be able to stick to his post if he joined the force, he decides to show what he can do in this respect. Consequently he tells his father that his habit of leaving the house so frequently is due to his liking for fishing. Away from the house, however, he shows himself as Constable Brown, a role in which he encounters many strange adventures. Two catchy musical numbers in the picture are “I Want to Cling to Ivy” an d ~'The Flies Crawled up the Window.” Excellent supports include “By the Weig” (Ideal News), Summit Seekers ’ (New Zealand scenic), Cold Blooded Friends (Nature). Box plans are now open at the Civic where seats may be reserved at no extra charge.
