Gatherings Held in Town and Suburbs. COMING-OF-AGE CELEBRATED. A coming-of-age party was given by friends of the Student Christian Movement at Stonehurst Private Hotel recently for Miss Margaret Agnes Evans, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. R. Evans, of Rossall Street. The Rev Alun Richards gave a talk on some of his experiences during his recent travels in Europe. Those present includel: Air and Airs, R. R. Sinclair, Aylmer Street, Spreydon. to celebrate the silver anniversary of; their wedding. Dancing and musical; items were the feature of the evening. Enjoyable musical numbers were contributed by Messrs M Walton, G. Thorne, J. Priestley, L. Bennett, M. Sinclair and Miss Muschamp. The toast of the evening was proposed by Mr M. Skidmore. Mr R. Sinclair was M.C. Among those present were: Air and Airs A. Sinclair, Mr and Airs Lane, Mr and Mrs Brittan, Air and Airs Kirwan; Misses Aluschamp, Gwen Jagger, Ann Baretta, Agnes Baretta, Milly Edwards. Eunice Steinmetz, Frances Murray (Dunedin). Thorne and J. Priestley. Cabin Party for Bride-to-be. Miss Vera Dalzell, Clyde Road, was hostess on Thursday morning at a cabin tea in honour of Miss Alice Blakely, who will leave shortly for Toronto, Canada, where her marriage to Mr Gerald Morrison will take place. Competitions were won by Miss Blakely, Mrs K. Andrews and Mrs M’Donald, and songs were sung by Mrs Andrews and Miss Vera Dalzell. Those present were: Alesdames Rudd (Blenheim), M’Donald (Tai Tapu) and Kenneth Andrews; Misses Alice Blakely, Mildred Lance. Elaine Wickenden, Una Morrison and Betty TTthmus (Melbourne). Dance at Shirley. In connection with the harvest festival at St Stephen’s Church, Shirley, a most enjoyable and largely-attended dance was held on Wednesday evening in the parish hall. The striking decorations were carried out in corn, autumn foliage and brightly-coloured flowers. The stage was arranged as a harvest field, with standing stooks, a special feature being a large harvest moon. During the evening several picturesque folk dances were performed by the folk dancing club under Miss Millicent Kennedy. Music was supplied by Duckworth’s orchestra. Mr Knowles was M.C. Fendslton Boys’ Club. The Fendalton Boys’ Club held a successful dance on Wednesday evening in the St Barnabas Hall. Syd. Shackel’s Orchestra supplied the music, and extras played by Mr J. Gwynne were appreciated. The committee responsible for the arrangements comprised: —J. Stevens' (M.C.), W. Bldke, W. Thompson, E. Ullrich, J. Wilkins and M. Greer. Among those present were: Alisses B. Simpson, C. Fisher, G. Chappell, T. Wolf, M. Barter. N. Frettijohn, F. Nightingale, R. Wilson, B. Frettijohn, B. Rivers, H. Atoorhouse, B. Priestnall, F. The regular patrons of the New Brighton District High School Committee’s weekly euchre were entertained to a free evening on Wednesday night. Before play commenced, Mr L„ R. Hurrell moved a vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr R. S. Pearson, which was carried, those present standing in silence. Mr Ilurrell also expressed the committee’s gratitude for the regular attendance and assistance throughout the year. Supper arrangements \vere in the hands of Mesdames 11. O. Brooks, R. Campbell and M. Moses. Prizes were won by Mrs L. Frost 1, Mrs M. Moses and Mrs R. A. Jackson equal 2 and Mrs B. Self 3. Men—Mr G. Geayley 1, Mr E. F. Phillpott 2 and Mr A. J. Taylor 3. The competition was won by Mrs B. Self.
