Old Landmark to Go.

A NOTHER of Wellington’s early historical buildings is to disappear within the next week or two. Demolition work has commenced on the old Caledonian Hall (for many years known as the Foresters’ Hall) in Tory Street just south of Courtenay Place. This two-storey wooden building is approximately sixty years old, the original title having been granted to Mr Constantine Edward Zohrab on June 28, 1875, by the Marquis of Normanby, the then Governor of New Zealand, and the Caledonian Hall was erected. Three years later it was transferred to Court Robin Hood and Court Sir G. Bowen, A.0.F., in common tenancy. After serving as headquarters for these lodges the building has had a varied career, having in turn been used as a Sunday School, dancehall, soft goods factory, grain store, brass foundry, motor garage, engineer’s workshop, and lately as a warehouse.
