RECLAIMED LAND.

Report on Subsidence at Lyttelton. FURTHER IMPROVEMENT. The improvement of an area of the reclamation at Lyttelton is under the consideration of the Harbour Board. At the board's meeting yesterday the engineer, Mr P. W. Fryer, reported that a recent survey of an area at the south-west end of the reclamation showed that during the process of drying and consolidation a considerable shrinkage and consequent settlement had taken place. “This area,” the report continued, “was furthest from the points at which spoil was dumped in by the dredge, and only the finest and softest material reached it; hence the settlement on drying, whic*h amounts to over 4 feet in the lowest spot. “I consider that it would be of great advantage when this land (which includes a portion ot the recreation area reserved for the Lyttelton Borough Council) is utilised in the future, if it were brought up to proper level. I beg to suggest therefore that this be done now while the ground is vacant, bv pumping in dredgings at the lower end when the tide and weather are suitable. It would be necessary to erect a skeleton wharf at which the dredge would berth outside the mole, but this could be built with secondhand material which would afterwards be recovered; so that the cost would be only that of erection, which I estimate at about £200." Mr 11. M. Chrvstall said that he was fully in agreement with the proposal of the engineer. The engineer’s recommendations were adopted.
