WARM TRIBUTES.

Administrative Work of Mr J. W. Beanland. Complimentary reference to the untiring services of Mr J. W. Beanland as chairman of the Works Committee of the Christchurch City Council was made at the conclusion - of yesterday’s meeting of the committee. On the eve of his departure on a tour of Great Britain and Europe, Mr Beanland had invited the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P.), fellow members of the committee,, the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) and various officers of the council to join him at afternoon tea in order that he might express his appreciation of the help given him during the year. The function developed pleasantly into a general farewell to Mr Beanland. Mr Beanland said that he had arranged the gathering so that he might sincerely thank the members of the committee for the help given him during the year. He felt that in going away just before the estimates for the coming year were framed, he was leaving the bulk of the work on the new chairman (Mr J. S. Barnett), and members of the committee, when, perhaps, he i himself knew how best the money shotild be spent. He knew, however, that the committee would adopt the same policy that it had carried out during the past year—the policy of doing as much tar-sealing as possible and of maintaining the city streets as they were, or improving them if possible. After referring to the manner in which the committee had kept its expenditure within the estimates, Mr Beanland said that Mr Barnett would have to be brusque at times as he had had to be, and just deal with matters fairly. Continuing, he acknowledged the ready assistance given by the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Galbraith) and the Assistant Engineer (Mr E. Somers) in furnishing him with reports when they were required and the good work of the clerk of the committee (Mr H. S. Feast). He thanked Mr Somers particularly for the hard work he had put in to the work of the committee. Mr Barnett, w r ho will act as chairman in Mr Beanland’s absence, expressed thanks to Mr Beanland for nominating him for the position He hoped that, with the co-operation of the committee and with the forebearance of its members, it might be able to accomplish some of the work that Mr Beanland would have done during the year. The Mayor, in adding his felicitations, said he had already expressed appreciation of the great services that Mr Beanland had rendered to the committee, the council and the citizens of Christchurch by his devoted attention to the work of the committee. He joined with those present in paying further tribute to Mr Beanland’s devotion to duty, and in wishing him a very happy journey. The New Chairman. The fact that Mr Beanland had always enjoyed his confidence, was mentioned by the Deputy-Mayor, the Rev J. K. Archer. While he did not wish to make invidious comparisons, the committee and the council need have no doubts about the chairmanship in Mr Beanland’s absence. He had known Mr Barnett for many years. He knew his capacities and regarded him, as one of the strongest men round the j council table.
