AMATEUR ATHLETES.

Inter-club Competition Discussed. IMPORTANT DECISIONS. The conduct of inter-club athletic meetings was the subject of a long discussion at a special meeting of delegates to the Canterbury Centre of the Aew Zealand Amateur a tine tic Association last evening, many important decisions being made. Air J. K. Moloney presided over a good attendance. Air Moloney said that there was an excellent inter-club system, which' had had a most beneficial effect on the general standard of athletics in Canterbury. It was so excellent that there was just a chance that it might collaps’d unless things were tightened up. i Air L. H. Hill suggested that a standard might be imposed. There was an inclination to' run puiely for points which had a bad effect, i Afr M. Leadbetter said that a man should qualify before he was able to run in a grade. Sometimes, when there were only a few A grade starter*?, runners with no qualification would enter in the hope of gaining a point for their clubs. Air Hill said that it should rest with the clubs to grade the competitors and decide in which events they could enter. Air Aloloney said that the A and B grades could be limited, with an unrestricted C grade. It was decided that A grade runners would have to qualify, but that there should be no restriction on entries. Air Lead bet ter moved, and Mr Gasson seconded that there be A, B and C grades with no limit of entries but with a handicapper’s qualification, clubs to see to the grading of their runners. The motion was carried. Mr Leadbetter moved that for next season entries be called on a basis of an A class competition and a B class competition, and at the end of the season the points be reckoned up separately for each class. The classing of clubs would be in the hands of the centre. On Mr Gasson’s motion it was decided that teams should be entered with the secretary by each Thursday evening. It was decided to ask each club to nominate three officials for the interclub series. The C grade age was specified as under eighteen, and limitations were imposed on the events to be held in this grade. Practice for Field Events. Another matter which came before the meeting was that of the promotion of added interest in and facilities for field events, with special relation to training during the. season. The chairman said that while Canterbury had attained reasonable prowess in track athletics it was thought that a coaching scheme for field athletics would be advisable. Mr J. A. Gasson (C.A.*A.C.) said that his club had considered the idea of conducting training and coaching in the evening each week throughout the winter, but they had fobnd that thequestion was a big one and more fitted for the centre’s consideration. Accommodation was a big aspect of the question. The meeting set up a special committee to go into the question, with power to act. Canterbury Executive.
