ELLESMERE DRAINAGE.
It is expected that a decision will shortly be made by the Government regarding State support for a scheme for maintaing Lake Ellesmere at mean sea level, .making thousands of acres of land now flooded available for pasture. The scheme is to erect a mole at Taumutu to give a permanent outlet from the lake to the sea. It has been advocated for a considerable time by the board and the Canterbury Progress League. Mr F. Coop stated at a meeting of the Ellesmere Drainage Board yesterday that the Prime Minister had expressed considerable interest in the scheme and sympathy with the board in its difficulties. The drainage proposition would shortly be considered by Cabinet, and, although no hurried decision could be expected, the board would probably receive advice of the Government’s intentions within the next two months.
