Gatherings Held in Town and Country. COMING-OF-AGE CELEBRATED. In honour of the twenty-first birthday of Mr Jack Wakelin, of Kaikoura, a surprise T mrty was held recently at the residence of Mr and Mrs B. Sloane, Coronation Street, Spreydon. Games and dancing were enjoyed. Mr Sloane proposed the health of the guest of honour and Mrs Wakelin presented her son with the customary key. Those present were:—Mr and Mrs B. Sloane, Mesdames Wakelin and Dougall; Misses Molly Rogers, Winnie Clai'K, Joyce Shier, Joan Cawtheray, Ada Berry, Rene Round, Miriam Kay, "Winnie Irwin, Edna Henderson, Frances Dougall, Lucy Wakelin and Peggy Sloane; Messrs J. B. Wakelin, K. Wright, R. Milne. D. Smith, H. Berry, C. Dann, T. Henderson, B. Sloane, J. Weatherhead, G. Inkster, N. Horne, L. Anderson, D. Horne, G. Dougall, D. Sloane, Bill and George Wakelin. Bowlers Entertain. The members of the Riccarton Racecourse Bowling Club entertained the ladies at their final day for the season on Saturday. There was an excellent attendance and mixed progressive games were played, the five rinks being used. The winners of the ladies’ games were Mesdames George Reed and J. De Rungs. The Clifford Buttons tournament for the men resulted in a win for F. Giles and M. Bridges. The vice-president, Mr J. Bailey, presented each winning lady with a ct\t glass crystal vase. The ladies present were: —Mesdames George Gould, J. Bailey, Albert Cutis, P. D. M’Nab, E. Orchard, G. Reed C. Townsend, Maurice Bridges, R. Chamberlain, P. Anderson, E. Pearce, J. Holmes, J. To celebrate the recent marriage of Miss Dulcie Grether to Mr Marcus Jones, friends gathered in the evening at the home of Mr G. Grether, Birchwood Avenue. The time was spent with competitions and games, the win* ners of the competitions being Misses V. Wilkins, D. Swann, Messrs H. Wilkins, P. Jones, B. Williams and K Tones. Amopg those present were:—Mr and Mrs G. Grether, Mr and Mrs H. Wilkins, Mr and Mrs K. Jones, Mr and Mrs C. Boyd, Mr and Mrs M. Jones and Mrs E. Grether; Misses V. Wilkins, S. Olley and D. Swan: Messrs T. Cooper, P. Jones and B. Williams. Social and Dance. The fortnightly card social and dance held in the Papanui School on Saturday evening was well attended. The winners at cards were: Ladies, Mrs Derret 1, Mrs J. Pearce 2; men, Mr Schimanski 1, Mr Sibbald 2. A statue dance was won by Miss Daphne Gee and Mr Fielding, and a lucky spot opestep was won by Miss Roberts and Mr L. Craighead. Mr W. F. Wallis was pianist and Mr J. Cains was M.C.
