LOOKING FORWARD.
Co-ordinating Development of Harbour. “ PIONEERING WOftK." At its meeting this morning, the Lyttelton Harbour Board, on the motion of Mr H. M. Chry stall, passed the following resolution:— “ That the Harbour Improvement Committee bring forward suggestions to the board so that the current maintenance and improvement work of the pert may be better co-ordinated to conform to any possible plan of development consistent with requirements of the shipping and business community.” “ My object in bringing this motion before the board,” said Mr Chry stall, “is to focus attention on the urgent need for a definite programme of work, whether it be maintenance or new construction. The need of a connected and co-ordinated programme is evidenced by the following matters, which have more recently engaged the attention of this board, and I maintain will still more engage the attention ol the board in the near future.” Mr Chry stall then listed the following matters:— (1) Dredging, reclamation and sitting of the harbour. (2) The construction of the new oil wharf. (3) The widening of No. 1 breastwork. (4) The provision of extra cold storage space. (5) The provision of better facilities for the storage and preservation of frozen meat. (•) The waterfront. (7) Transfer of the Harbour Bonrd office to Lyttelton. (8) Better facilities for the embarking and disembarking of li\e stock and the elimination of the present cattle race. (10) The expansion of the inner basin. (11) The access to the sea commission. (12) The provision of a major relief scheme for unemployment.
