BEAUTIFYING WORK.

Association Delegates " ‘-Confer. A move towards co-operative efforts in beautifying the suburbs of Christchurch in addition to the inner area of the city was made when the members of the Christchurch Beautifying Association and delegates of suburban burgesses’ and beautifying associations met in -.conference last evening in the Chamber of Commerce. A number of instances where improvements could be carried out were quoted, and delegates of the various bodies will report on the meeting, which will be followed by a second conference shortly. Mr R. B. Owen, who presided, said that for some time the Qhfistchurch Beautifying Association had felt that, while there was good work being done in the centre of the city, yet better attention was needed for the suburbs. 1 He wanted delegates from the fringe of the city to become inflicted with the beautifying “bug,” and to work for the cause of beauty, as at present very little was being done to improve the amenities of the city. In conclusion, he expressed pleasure at the presence of Mr A. Hv Bridge, town planning officer of the City Council. Delegates were present from the following bodies:—Woolston Ratepayers Association. Burwood Progressive Association, North Beach Progress and | Beautifying Association, Sumner Beautifying and Beach Improvement Association, Papanui Beautifying Association, and the Opawa-Hillsborough, Richmond, North Linwood, Diamond Harbour and St Albans Burgesses’ Associations. Need for Recreation Areas. Mr Bridge read a paper on “ Parks, i Recreation Grounds and Playgrounds,” i stating that there was no disputing j the necessity for providing open spaces 1 and recreation facilities for the members of any community, both young and old. During the ensuing discussion Mr E. H. Andrews traced the acquisition of the land for the various parks and reserves in Christchurch by the City Council, stating that the city was fortunate in its recreation areas and =?■ school playing grounds. After further suggestions had been put forward Mr Owen again urged the delegates to take a keen interest in beautifying work and the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
