SPORT OF POLO.

Signs of Revival in Canterbury. An indication of the revival of polo in Canterbury was given at the end of last week, when a match was between the Marlborough Club and the Amuri Club at Culverden, Amuri winning by five goals to three. On the Saturday an American tournament was played. A scratch team, known as the “ Remnants” won by scoring five goals, while the other two teams participating scored four goals each. The tournament was decided on the aggregate number of goals. The original match between Marlborough and Amuri was arranged in face of no little difficulty. The Teams. The Marlborough team which met defeat at the hands of Amuri comprised: Sandford Critchley (captain), Rawi Murray, Pat Dillon and Pip Vavasour. The Ainuri team was: L. R. C. Macfarlane (captain) Dick Ormond, Paul Thompson and Rawson Davidson. The standard of polo was considered to be good, considering the fact that it was the first match for some time and that many of the players were young, some of them taking part in a match for the first time. The Marlborough team remained the same for the American tournament the next day. In the Amuri team lan Rennie substituted for Macfarlane, and the third team the “Remnants” comprised: D. W. Gould, Macfarlane. Horton Davidson with P. Nurse and JThompson taking alternate chukkas.

The Marlborough Club was formed two years ago, and this is the club’s second season, although to date the members have played mostly among themselves. The Amuri Club was active from 1919 to about 1931. Last season the members also kept their hands in with a little practice, but nothing was attempted on a large scale. Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane stated yesterday that the matches were played with the hope of stimulating the sport in Canterbury. There was a possibility that some of the country clubs would begin operations again.
