Marlborough’s Fight to Avert Defeat. (Special to the “Star.”) NELSON. April 10. The Newman Challenge Shield mat.:h which concluded yesterday provided one of the most thrilling finishes seen here this season. First innings scores were: Nelson, 289; Marlborough, 272. In their second innings Nelson made 268. With 286 needed to win, Marlborough’s chances looked hopeless. Their first five wickets fell for 7S, but O’Sullivan and Rowe put up a great stand. O'Sullivan made 99 not out, and the tail wagged, bringing the score up to 272 before the last -wicket went. Nelson thus won by 13 runs after a wonderful fight by Marlborough.
