DENNISTON NOTES.

School Committee Holds Meeting. (Special to the “ Star.*’) DENNISTON, April 5. The monthly meeting of the Denniston School Committee was held at the schoolroom on Wednesday evening; present—Mr R. Pollock (chairman), W. Black, W. Cooper, D. Edmunds and A. J. Findlay (secretary). It was decided that a letter of appreciation be forwarded the Westport Coal Company for a donation of timber for seats on the playground. It was decided to renew locks on some of the school cupboards. Balls for Rugby and basketball had been supplied by the committee for use at the primary school. Mr W. Black was welcomed back to the committee by the chairman after his absence on sick leave. The final meeting of the committee was arranged to be held prior to the annual meeting of householders on Monday, August 30, at 8 p.m. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the business. Men's Hockey Club. The annual meeting of the Kiwis Men’s Hockey Club was held in Findlay’s rooms on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance. The annual report and financial statement was disposed of as satisfactory. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr A. Marr; vice-president, Mr T. Gould; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. J. Findlay; committee, Messrs D. M’Kay, M. Sumby and J. Doyle. It was decided to commence practice immediately, days for which were arranged. It was also agreed to hold evening lectures on the game. There is every prospect of a strong representative team being selected from the material offerings It is hoped that sufficient men’s teams will be available this season to ensure keen competition. ladies’ Hockey Club. The Ladies’ Hockey Club has commenced regular practice and is confident of being able to field a worthy team in time for the opening of the championship matches. The club’s opening dance will be held at Croudis’s Hall, Burnett’s Face, next Wednesday evening. Hockey Sub-Association. The annual meeting of the Buller Hockey Sub-Association will be held at Granity on Thursday, April 12, at 2 p.ni. Domain Board. The annual fixtures meeting of the Domain Board was held yesterday, Mr V. Smith presiding. There were present also Messrs George Jack, sen., M. Clark, members of the bohrd and the delegates of the following sporting bodies: Association football, Mr H. Baird; Rugby Union, Messrs W. Andrews and J. Steel (Batchelors’ Club), D. Tojlan and T. Dellaway (Pirates): hockey, Messrs A. J. Findlay. Mr Sumby and Miss H. Payne; basketball, Misses Muriel Ward and Peggy Archer; Denniston District High School, Mr I. B. Hubbard. General business was transacted and each of the clubs received its allocation of fixture days on the Denniston board’s recreation ground. HOKITIKA NOTES. (Special to the “ Star.”) HOKITIKA, April 6. The annual meeting of the Hokitika Golf Club was held last evening, the club captain (Mr J. C. Macfarlane) presiding. Amendments to the rules were adopted, providing that the secretary and treasurer and five male members of the committee be elected by th£ men’s section, the remaining members of the committee, the ladies’ club captain and secretary, to be appointed by the ladies. The committee was given power to remit subscriptions under circumstances it may consider fit, while it was also decided to create an honorary membership. The following officers were elected:— President and club captain, Mr J. C. Macfarlane; secretary, Mr F. M’Cabe; treasurer, Mr J. A. Chesney; auditor, Mr H. F. Cook; committee, Messrs W. Wilson. S. A. C. Darby, T. Cagney, W. E. Brown and T. P. Pain, the ladies’ club captain and secretary. The ladies’ section held their annual meeting prior to the general meeting, the following committee being re-elect-ed:—Mrs W. Wilson (club captain), Miss G. King (senior handicap manager), Miss Potts (junior handicap manager), and Mrs Dorreen (secretary). It was reported that a cup had been donated by Misses B. and B. Yarrall, and a trophy by Miss M. E. Anderson. Aviation. Mr A. H. Nancekivell, for the second morning in succession, left here at 6.30 o’clock for the Ha*ast, where he took on board a lady passenger, arriving back at 10.30 a.m. Personal. Mr F. W. Ashley, the recently-appoint-ed county engineer, has arrived, and will commence his duties on Monday. Mr W. Butland, Hokitika, has obtained a position as a reporter on the “ New Zealand Herald,” and has left to take up his new work. Mr Butland has just left the Hokitika District High School, where he was editor of the school magazine.
