Monthly Meeting of County Council. (Special to the “Star.”) GREYMOUTH, April 6. Mr G. Blair presided over the monthly meeting of the CJrey County Council last evening. Accounts amounting to £3252 12a lid were passed for payment.. The Main Highways Board forwarded authority for £250 (£3 for £1) in connection with the road deviation to avoid sea erosion at Rapa hoe. Goldfields revenue amounting to £464 5s 2d was received from the Treasury Department. The Unemployment Board advised that Anzac Day would be observed as a holiday for relief workers, and that all workers under the various schemes will, the exceptions of 4A and 48, who normally would be working on the day, would be paid as usual. The Main Higliways Board advised that until the estimates for the current year were available only ordinary maintenance work was to be carried out on the highways. It was decided to bring before the members of the Main Highways Board, on their next visit to the Coasi, the question of subsidising the work of putting a permanent surface on the three roads leading out of Greymoutli. The applications of G. E. Boole for «i prospecting license over an area on the Marsden-Du ngan vij 1 e Road, S. Sullivan for a prospecting license in Block 111., Waimea S.D., and S. B. White lor a prospecting license in Block 1., Wuiwhero S.D., were received. Permission was granted to the Golden Coast Gold Mining Co. to lay a pipe line across the Grey-Westport Coastal Road, subject to conditions to be imposed by the engineer. The council agreed to the old basis of apportionment of the heavy traffic fees for the current year. A complaint from P. Ryder. Inchbonnie, regarding the alleged overgrown state of the roads in the Inchbonnie and Poerua districts made certain allegations against the work of the roadmen. The engineer said that the roadmen were quite satisfactory. It was decided to send a copy of the letter to each of the roadmen, and defer the letter until their reply. The matter of purchasing two trucks was left in the hands of the engineer. A deputation of Rotomanu farmers, consisting of Messrs H. Haskell, Morland and Lloyd, waited on the council -seeking a reduction in rates of at least 25 per cent and the reintroduction of the levy on timber. The chairman, in reply, said they would be striking a new rate within a month or so and they would try to keep it as low as possible. The county clerk presented a financial statement showing that the receipts for the year exceeded the estimate by £1493 3s 4d, The resignation of Mr E. Comerford, county roadman in the Nelson Creek district for the past thirty years, was received. Tributes were paid to the services of Mr Comerford, and it was decided to grant him three months' leave of absence. Bake Brunner Rugby Sub-Division. The annual meeting of the Lake Brunner Rugby Sub-Division was. held at Moana, Mr N. L. Field presiding. The entry of a team front the Taylorville Rugby Club was accepted. The delegate, Mr G. M'Cullough, was welcomed to the meeting. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr A. T. Birchfield; president, Mr W. Lowe; vicepresident, Mr N. L. Field; secretary, Mr C. James; treasurer, Mr S. W. Kinraid; auditor, Mr N. L. Field; delegate to W.C.R.U., Mr F. Baillie; postponement committee, Messrs W. Lowe and C. James; referees, Messrs J. Bell, D. M’lvor, E. Hallinan, V. H. Satherley, T. O’Brien, G. W. Kinraid, F. Scott arid T. Carley. The season will be opened on April 15 with the Shield competition of two rounds. A draw for the first round was made and the following teams will meet on Sunday, April 15: Ivotuku v. Taylorville; Kopara v. Stillwater; Tekinga v. Puiru. It was decided to ask the West Coast Union for a broadcast of all matches throughout the year. The West Coast Rugby Union will be requested to accept a selector from the sub-division. Miner Injured. An employee of the State Collieries, Mr Thomas Isherwood, Runanga; while working at Rewanui on Wednesday, fell from the bins and sustained three fractured ribs. • He was admitted to the Grey Hospital last evening. Memorial Fund. A list has been opened by the Mayor at the Council Chambers for the establishment of a fund to erect a memorial to the late Dr James Wilson M’Brearty. A public meeting will be held latfer, to decide what form the memorial will take. Valedictory. Members of the staff of the Greymouth police force assembled at the police station yesterday afternoon for the purpose of farewelling DetectiveSergeant T. E. Holmes and Sergeant M. Hodgins, who are under orders of transfer to Christchurch and Reefton respectively. Inspector Lopdell presided, and referred to the esteem in which the two men were held in the district. He congratulated them on their promotion, and on behalf of the force presented Holmes with an umbrella and a gold pencil, suitably inscribed, and Sergeant Hodgins with an electric kettle. Senior-Sergeant F. QuayJe, Mr H. Robinson, gaoler. Constable T. Kearney and Plain-clothes Constable E. J. C. Hay endorsed the inspector’s remarks, the recipients suitably responding. A welcome was extended to Detective H. PL Knight, who will replace Detective-Sergeant I-lolmes. Personal. Sergeant M. Hodgins, accompanied by his wife and family, left to-day on transfer to Reefton. Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes will leave for Christchurch on Tuesday next. Messrs G. T. Moore, president of the Nelson Racing Club, and Alex ThompSO J?i secretary, are visiting Greyinouth. Mrs J. A. Lee, wife of Mr J. A. Lee, M.P., is spending a holiday with her brother, Mr J. Guy, of Blaketown. Mr E. Caradus, Inspector of Schools, WelHngton, is visiting the West Coast. Mr and Mrs W. Weaver, Timaru arrived yesterday on a visit to Greymouth. Mrs T. A. W. Tate returned* yesterday from a holiday visit to Christchurch. Miss E. Goodson, Wellington, arrived yesterday on a holiday visit to Greymouth. Mr and Mrs A. Rholoff returned by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. Miss M. Galloway, Wellington, is visiting Mr and Mrs M. J. Phillips, Buccleugh Street. Messrs J. O’Brien, M.P., and J. B. Kent, who have been attending the Labour Party Conference, returned from Christchurch yesterday. Shipping. Karepo is due about Friday next to load timber for Melbourne and Adelaide. Kaintiro is due about Tuesday, to load timber for Sydney. REEFTON ACTIVITIES. (Special to the ** Star.”) REEFTON, April 6. Mr W. S. Pratt presided at the monthly meeting of the executive of the Reefton branch, R.S.A., Messrs Evans Campbell, Wells and A. Wills (secretary) being present. Correspondence was received from the Pensions Department regarding the application of one member, stating that no pension could be granted. It was decided to make application for the applicant to appear before the Medical. Board. The Whiuta branch wrote asking for a supply of poppies for Anzac Day. The secretary reported that a supply of poppies had been ordered and sufficient emblems obtained for the school children of the district.

It was decided to procure a lawnmower for keeping the memorial plot in order and to make arrangements for the regular cutting of the grass. It was decided to hold the annual meeting in the bandrooni on April 21, when a smoke concert will be held after the formal business has been transacted. Arrangements were left in the hands of Messrs Campbell, Wills and Pratt.

It was decided to call a conference of representatives from the County Council, Tnangahua Silver Band, ministers of religion and the executive of the R.S.A. on April 10 to discuss arrangements for the Anzac Day ceremonies. Inang-ahua Rugby Sub-Union. Mr T. C. Hepburn presided at the annual meeting of the Inangahua Rugby Sub-Union, representatives from the Waratah, Excelsior, Kiwi, Ikamatua, Cronadun and School Clubs being present. The following officers were elected:—Patron. Dr Marshall; president, Mr ,1. Crossman; vice-presidents. Messrs P. Kane, L. R. Austin, C. Barnett. A. Riclidale, J. Heslop, M. O’Malley and W. Schools’ competition—Reefton Convent primary and secondary, Reefton D.H.S. primary and secondary. Waiuta, lkamatua, Inangahua and Black’s Point priIt was decided to ask the West Coast Rugby Union to conclude arrangements regarding the affiliation of the SubUnion with the West Coast Union. Refresher Course. The three days’ physical instruction refresher course, under the direction of Mr Longworth, held for the teachers of the Reefton district, concluded today with a tennis match held on the Reefton courts; Much good work was done during the course under the expert instruction of Mr Longwortli, who will visit some of the schools next week to take groups of children for physical instruction. Dance. A very enjoyable dance was held in the bandroom by the staff of the Heefton D.H.S. to entertain the visiting teachers. Mrs F. W. Archer supplied the music and Mr M. Waddell was M.C. aupper was dispensed by the lady members of the staff.
